Concrete sealers block pores in concrete to prevent water absorption or they create an impenetrable layer which prevents debris and other materials from passing through. Depending on the formulation, the sealer either creates a surface barrier, or permeates the concrete to seal it against dirt, grime, salt, moisture, and stains.

Pressure washing will remove water-based concrete sealers. Penetrating sealers tend to be more durable and are less likely to be easily removed by pressure washing.

Concrete sealing should ideally be done as soon as new concrete has finished curing, though there’s never a bad time to have sealer applied if your current concrete isn’t sealed.
